At Madison Area Crime Stoppers, we believe that strong communities are built on trust, connection, and partnership. That’s why we’re excited to announce our participation in several National Night Out events happening across Dane County this August and September!
What is National Night Out?
National Night Out is an annual, nationwide event that brings together neighbors, law enforcement, and local organizations to foster safer, more caring communities. These fun, family-friendly gatherings are a great way to meet your neighbors, connect with local police officers, and learn more about what you can do to keep your community safe.
Where Can You Find Us?
This year, our team will be at National Night Out events in Madison, Marshall, Middleton, Waunakee, Sun Prairie, Cross Plains, Monona, Fitchburg, Cottage Grove, and DeForest. We’ll have a booth at each event, featuring handouts, interactive activities, and fun swag for all ages.
Here’s where you can catch us:
  • August 5: Westmorland Park in Madison (5–7pm) & 119 Industrial Dr in Marshall (4:30–7pm)
  • August 6: Lakeview Park in Middleton (5–7pm) & Village Park in Waunakee (5–7pm)
  • August 7: Cannery Square in Sun Prairie (5–7pm) & Glacier Creek Middle School in Cross Plains (5–7pm)

Unfortunately, it’s also prime time for porch pirates—thieves who steal packages right off doorsteps, often moments after delivery. Madison Area Crime Stoppers is here to help you stay one step ahead of these holiday Grinches with tips and strategies to protect your deliveries.

🎥 Spotlight on Safety
Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to join News 3 Now / Channel 3000 to discuss practical ways to prevent package theft. Check out the segment below to see how you can keep your holiday deliveries safe:

The Rise of Porch Piracy
Porch piracy is more than a nuisance—it’s a growing trend that affects communities nationwide. Thieves are getting more sophisticated, using stolen tracking numbers to intercept packages or disguising themselves as delivery workers to blend in. These crimes often happen quickly and can be difficult to spot.

“This time of year should be about giving, not taking,” said Tyler Grigg, President of Madison Area Crime Stoppers. “Porch pirates are preying on our community, but together we can stop them in their tracks. A few simple precautions can make a big difference.”

Tips to Outsmart Porch Pirates
Follow these steps to safeguard your holiday deliveries:
  1. Pick Up or Lock It Up
Use carrier pickup services or secure locker options to ensure packages are kept safe until you can retrieve them.
  2. Say Yes to Signatures
Request signature confirmation for high-value items to ensure they’re delivered directly to you.
  3. Leverage Technology
Install doorbell cameras and sign up for delivery notifications to monitor your packages in real-time.
  4. Build a Neighbor Network
Work with neighbors to retrieve packages or watch for suspicious activity.
  5. Plan Ahead
Schedule deliveries for times when you or someone you trust will be home to accept them.

What to Do If You’re a Victim
If a package is stolen despite your precautions, here’s how to respond:
  • Act Quickly: Report the theft to your local law enforcement and the delivery company immediately.
  • Check Your Cameras: If you have security cameras, review the footage and share it with authorities.
  • Know Your Options: Many retailers offer reimbursement or replacement policies for stolen items, so check their policies.

Working Together for a Safer Holiday Season
The holiday season is about community, generosity, and celebration. By staying vigilant and working together, we can outsmart porch pirates and ensure a joyful season for everyone in Dane County.

“Porch pirates may think they’re clever, but our community is smarter,” said Grigg. “Together, we can protect our holiday cheer and make Dane County safer for all.”
]]><![CDATA[Beware of Fake Warrant Scams!]]>Fri, 18 Oct 2024 20:18:24 GMThttps://www.madisonareacrimestoppers.org/blog/beware-of-fake-warrant-scamsWe want to alert the community about a recent surge in fake warrant scams. These scams aim to deceive you into handing over your hard-earned money.

How the Scam Works
Scammers pose as law enforcement, claiming you’ve missed a court date and must pay immediately to avoid arrest. They may demand payment via cash, cryptocurrency, or gift cards, using high-pressure tactics to make you act fast.

Victims have lost significant sums, with scammers providing fake badge or case numbers to appear credible. But remember, no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever ask for payment over the phone.

Protect Yourself:
  • Verify the Caller: Hang up and call your local law enforcement using a trusted number.
  • Never Send Money: Real agencies won’t request payment via phone or gift cards.
  • Check for Official Notices: Warrants are served in person or via mail, not by phone.
  • Be Skeptical: Scammers use urgency to push you into quick decisions. Take your time.
  • Protect Your Info: Don’t share personal details over the phone unless you initiated the call.
If you suspect a scam, contact your local law enforcement immediately. Stay vigilant and help us keep our community safe!
